The Wahoo BBC of Royal Oak was pleased to host the Canton Cornshuckers BBC at the annual Memorial Day match at Starr-Jaycee Park on Monday, May 27th. This marked the 3rd year the young Canton team has attended the event, evidence of the friendship between the two clubs.
The morning of the match saw members of the Wahoo and Cornshuckers BBC's marching in the Royal Oak Memorial Day Parade. Immediately following the parade, the ballists "broke bread" together at a pancake breakfast held at the Royal Oak Farmers Market. Unfortunately, the Wahoo's scheme of slowing down the young Cornshuckers through consumption of large stacks of flapjacks was unsuccessful.
It was a beautiful, sunny day and friends, family and fans flocked to Starr-Jaycee for this much anticipated showdown. The match began with team introductions and a brief history lesson from Hammer, the Wahoo BBC Captain. He touched upon the origins of Memorial Day and honored our service men and women through a moment of silence. He also highlighted the great skill possessed by the Cornshuckers and expressed his hope that the Wahoos would be able to match their skill (we couldn't).
The Wahoos won the coin toss and elected to take the field to begin the match. The Cornshuckers came out striking, batting through the line-up and amassing 8 tallies in the top of the 1st inning. The Wahoos managed only 1 tally of their own in the bottom of the inning.
The 'Shuckers continued to smack the ball deep throughout the match with each player proving to be an offensive threat. Additionally, the Wahoo fielders were stricken by a case of the "dropsies" on the defensive side of the ball, aiding the Cornshuckers and allowing them to score a tally in all but 2 innings.
The Wahoo bats on the other hand (very strong so far this season) were sadly quiet, with the Wahoos being held scoreless in 5 of the 9 innings. The Wahoos did manage to piece together some hits in the 5th inning, scoring 6 tallies. Ultimately, the Cornshuckers took home the victory by a final tally of 25-9.
It's important to note the Wahoo BBC was lacking 2 of its outfielders (Mallet and Shoeless) due to injuries sustained at the Stockton Cup. Although their presence on the field wouldn't have guaranteed a different outcome, we at least like to think we'd have stood a better chance.
The Wahoo BBC has a short break, returning to Starr-Jaycee this Sunday (June 2nd) to host the Union BBC of Dexter. Match begins at 1:00 PM.
