A Strong Start

On Sunday, May 5th the Wahoo BBC of Royal Oak welcomed the Lah-De-Dah BBC of Greenfield Village to Starr-Jaycee Park to open up the 2019 season. The Wahoo BBC last faced the LDD’s at Walnut Grove on August 18, 2018 when they took home a victory by a tally of 18-15. It was a beautiful day for base ball (70 and sunny) and the teams were grateful for the large turnout of supporters.

The Lah-De-Dah’s won the coin toss and elected to take the field to start the match. The Wahoo’s came out striking hard and often, scoring 8 runs in the top of the first frame and 7 in the second. They were also strong on the defensive side of the ball, holding the LDD’s scoreless through the first few innings.

One event of note came early in the match, when the Lah-De-Dah hurler and behind collided on a defensive play which eventually sent both off to the doctor for repairs (we wish them both speedy recoveries). As a result, the LDD’s were forced to continue the match shorthanded. True to the spirit of vintage base ball, the Wahoo’s lent the LDD’s a player each inning for the remainder of the match.

Despite being shorthanded, the Lah-De-Dah’s found success of their own later in the match, putting together a strong inning which was aided by a few Wahoo defensive blunders. This offensive surge had us thinking back to the loss to begin the 2018 season, when the Lah-De-Dah’s overcame a 7 run deficit in the final inning to defeat the Wahoo’s. Ultimately, the Wahoo’s were able to maintain their lead and took home the victory over the Lah-De-Dah’s.

The match marked the debut of the Wahoo’s two newest members, Norm “Cheers” Kennette and Jason “Sweepy” Schubb! Both gentleman proved themselves more than worthy to wear the Wahoo gray and blue and will be valuable assets to the team throughout the long season.

The Rubber Chicken was awarded to Boy Genius for a strong defensive inning which included 2 diving catches and obtaining all 3 outs. The Rubber Chicken (since renamed “Big Bawk” by BG’s daughter) will be awarded each match to the Wahoo player with the best play. It is an honor to receive and is coveted amongst the players.

The Wahoo’s take a week off to celebrate Mother’s Day and will return to the field on Saturday, May 18th in Flint to defend their title at the Stockton Cup. They will play the Lah-De-Dah’s next at Greenfield Village on August 18th.
